Here we have the Men at Arms getting ready to go up against fellow club member Stephen. For my units in this army I wanted a real mixed up, unevenly distributed look. I’ve never liked the standard number of figures evenly spaced DBA style units. Despite 35 years in this hobby this is my first historical army and I’m clearly not a purist! But I’ve done some research, read several books and listened to a podcast on the history of England during this period, so I’m definitely putting the effort in.<img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-attachment-id=\"1103\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/brigademodels.co.uk\/mws\/blog\/2019\/03\/08\/men-at-arms-on-the-march\/wotr2\/\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brigademodels.co.uk\/mws\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/wotr2.png?fit=1000%2C425&ssl=1\" data-orig-size=\"1000,425\" data-comments-opened=\"1\" data-image-meta=\"{"aperture":"0","credit":"","camera":"","caption":"","created_timestamp":"0","copyright":"","focal_length":"0","iso":"0","shutter_speed":"0","title":"","orientation":"0"}\" data-image-title=\"wotr2\" data-image-description=\"\" data-image-caption=\"\" data-large-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brigademodels.co.uk\/mws\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/wotr2.png?fit=840%2C357&ssl=1\" class=\"wp-image-1103 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brigademodels.co.uk\/mws\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/wotr2.png?resize=754%2C377&ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"754\" height=\"377\" \/>To get a good mix for the units I used miniatures from Peter Pig, Lancashire Games and Essex Miniatures (plus some others I’ve forgotten). I even chose some miniatures from the early 15th century to represent a few of the less wealthy lords and knights, still using their grandfathers armour.
\n<img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-attachment-id=\"1104\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/brigademodels.co.uk\/mws\/blog\/2019\/03\/08\/men-at-arms-on-the-march\/wotr1\/\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brigademodels.co.uk\/mws\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/wotr1.png?fit=1000%2C425&ssl=1\" data-orig-size=\"1000,425\" data-comments-opened=\"1\" data-image-meta=\"{"aperture":"0","credit":"","camera":"","caption":"","created_timestamp":"0","copyright":"","focal_length":"0","iso":"0","shutter_speed":"0","title":"","orientation":"0"}\" data-image-title=\"wotr1\" data-image-description=\"\" data-image-caption=\"\" data-large-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brigademodels.co.uk\/mws\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/wotr1.png?fit=840%2C357&ssl=1\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1104 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brigademodels.co.uk\/mws\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/wotr1.png?resize=840%2C420&ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"840\" height=\"420\" \/>Another thing I decided to do was not to\u00a0 chose a side in the conflict. It was clearly a messy affair with allegiances changing as the conflict went on (or even during a battle!). Add that to the fact the armies had identical troop types I went for removable flags for the units and commanders. In the first picture the units are representing Sir Thomas Neville but after a quick swap they are now in the service of Lord Dudley.<img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-attachment-id=\"1102\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/brigademodels.co.uk\/mws\/blog\/2019\/03\/08\/men-at-arms-on-the-march\/wotr3\/\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brigademodels.co.uk\/mws\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/wotr3.png?fit=1000%2C500&ssl=1\" data-orig-size=\"1000,500\" data-comments-opened=\"1\" data-image-meta=\"{"aperture":"0","credit":"","camera":"","caption":"","created_timestamp":"0","copyright":"","focal_length":"0","iso":"0","shutter_speed":"0","title":"","orientation":"0"}\" data-image-title=\"wotr3\" data-image-description=\"\" data-image-caption=\"<p>Changable Flags for my Units<\/p>\n\" data-large-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brigademodels.co.uk\/mws\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/wotr3.png?fit=840%2C420&ssl=1\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1102 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brigademodels.co.uk\/mws\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/wotr3.png?resize=840%2C472&ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"840\" height=\"472\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brigademodels.co.uk\/mws\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/wotr3.png?resize=850%2C478&ssl=1 850w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/brigademodels.co.uk\/mws\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/wotr3.png?resize=250%2C141&ssl=1 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 1362px) 62vw, 840px\" \/>I think this system will work quite well and I intend on making a collection of flags, so regardless of who my opponent turns up supporting, I’ll be able to pick an opposing lord!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
I finally managed to get my first Wars of the Roses units done.
